Gratitude from the Heart

We. Are. The. Heart.

This wasn’t just the slogan for the first ever Heartland Yoga Festival, this was a mantra that we embodied as a community.  We truly came together to unite in gratitude, play and love.  Can you feel the reverberations of our intentions?

Here are just a few of our adventures from last weekend…

Yoga + Hiking, spelunking style.

Tony Alvarez now has many adoring yogi fans after turning my class into a rock concert.

Serious fun with Gina Caputo, Yogini on the Loose.

Community art making moment led by Jamie Winter Dawson, you know I’m all about it.

Queens Lauren Leduc of Karma Tribe Yoga and Angela Cronk of Hagoyah are the inspiring visionaries behind this whole shindig.

THANK YOU COMMUNITY for making this ground breaking project a reality.  For more amazing photos of the fest, visit Yogafolio.

Next, Yoga + Hiking at Parkville Nature Sanctuary!  Details and registration coming soon, stay tuned 🙂

We Are the Heart <3

heartlandyogafestpromo

Happy Summer Solstice!  Celebrate with us at Heartland Yoga Festival this weekend, June 22-24 in Kansas City!  I will be leading a hike through the trails around Unity Village at 7am on Saturday the 23rd followed by community yoga with live music by Tony Alvarez at 8am!  If you are unfamiliar with the intention behind this movement, no one says it better than the founders themselves.

Heartland Yoga Festival Manifesto:

You and I…we are the heart. The vital essence. The center of love and compassion. The vitality of this land. Within this heart is a quickening. It started as a whisper and will crescendo to a wild roar.

Our time of disconnection is over. We’ve had enough of staring at our phones instead of looking into the eyes of our neighbors. We are done with being detached from Mother Earth. We are done being so busy that we forget to live. There is no more hiding our pain and self-criticism. There is no more illusion, no more pretending. The time to communally awaken to our beautifully connected souls is right here and right now. In the open heart of this country.

This is the Heartland. Where it’s still cool to be a good neighbor and to smile at strangers. Where ego doesn’t shake authenticity. Where we support local, and tend to the Earth with loving care. Where all it takes is a simple reason and a beautiful day to come together in celebration. Where community always trumps competition.Where we all belong. A place of great pride.

As we unite for Heartland Yoga Festival, through our connection, our shared breath, our authenticity, wildness, and utter unabashed delight, we will send a pulsing vibration of love and light. A positive charge so big that it will bleed beyond our borders, radiating outward, penetrating and changing all beings for the highest good.

YOUR heart, breath, and light are vitally important. Join us as we shift into a space of love, connection, and radical self and communal care. We are the heart and this is the Heartland.

Intentional Play at the Arboretum

Well, it only took us three tries (third time’s a charm), but it finally happened!  After an April filled with cursed, snowy Sundays, we finally got a perfect spring day for our Yoga + Hike excursion at the Overland Park Arboretum!  And it was worth the wait.

Yoga + Hiking is BACK!

It’s officially the last day of February, and you know what that means…

unnamed-21

Yoga + Hiking is back in full swing!

If you are an adventurous yogi thinking outside the yoga studio, we’ve got you.  Karma Tribe Yoga and I have been working hard to bring you the most high quality yoga hikes at beautiful, restorative destinations in and around Kansas City.  This year you can look forward to even more opportunity to grow and expand your horizons.  Yoga + Hiking season spans from March-November, which means you have 9 different opportunities to discover hidden gems in your own backyard and BEYOND (stay tuned to hear about our Yoga + Hiking Retreats).  Travel with us to a new destination each month to explore your inner and outer worlds.

Forest Therapy (immersion into restorative environments) has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and relieve mental fatigue.  Stepping away from the endless buzz of our modern world to tune in with ourselves and nature can be profoundly healing.  Look no further than mother nature to recharge, create more balance in every facet of life, and connect to your deep intuitive self.

unnamed-19

We hope to see you at our first Yoga + Hiking excursion at the Blue River Parkway Trails on Sunday, March 18 from 10-11:30am!  More details coming very soon.  Stay in the loop by joining our Facebook group, Yoga + Hiking with Sedona Alvarez.

Looking Forward with Love,

Sedona

Elemental Yoga + Journaling Series

Join me at Hagoyah every Sunday in January, starting January 1st.

elemental-yoga-2016

Earth, Fire, Water and Air.  How are these elements represented in you?  Could you be experiencing excess or deficiency in any of these areas?  How can you create more balance and experience more freedom this year?
This workshop incorporates Ayurveda (the sister science to yoga), yoga asana, meditation and journaling to facilitate emotional healing. In order to make space for new, we must clear out the old. Be prepared to purge.

Class structure: 1 hour elemental yoga flow (focus on a different element each week), 10 minute meditation, 20 minute journaling

What does making dream catchers have to do with yoga?

Arts and crafts are good fun and all…but what in the hell does messing with willow sticks and tying knots have to do with YOGA?

Everything, my friend.

image

Everything about the dream catcher is symbolic.  The hoop itself (a “mandala”, in Indian culture) is a sacred circle that stands for unity and oneness.  Sound familiar?  Yoga literally means “to yoke”.  We use our yoga practice to unite our minds with our bodies.  We use the repetitive act of weaving our dream catchers to join the mind and body.  You can experience flow through yoga asana or through crafting netted sculpture.  Both are “art making”.  Both are ways to explore moving meditation.  Join our community circle o’ creativity this Saturday at Hagoyah (1-3pm) to experience moving meditation/flow!

Ps- I love this blog post detailing the history behind dream catcher making in Native American culture.  Happy reading!

So much JOY!  I feel damn lucky to wake up every day and share what I love.  What’s on the agenda for November, you ask?

Ruby has got the right idea.  Reflection.

Granted, the only time you will EVER see this spaz in a state of zen is after a vigorous game of fetch.  She goes and goes until she simply can not.  Sound familiar?  I and so many others are guilty of the grind.  Hey, what other option is there for the starving artist type?  Besides to, well…starve.  If you are going to be your own boss and juggle 2 jobs at 8 different locations, you had better take time to hit the pause button.  No matter what you do or how busy you are, there is always time in the day to be still.

I challenge you to take time this month for yourself.  Start today.  Start small.  Book a message, book a healing session with Lisa Lola Healing Arts, take a restorative yoga class (I teach 3 per week, see my schedule), take 5 minutes out of your day to sit quietly with yourself.  It doesn’t take any effort.  In fact, that is the point!  Sometimes doing nothing at all is the best and most productive thing.  Before diving head first into the holiday season, take a giant step back.  Breathe.  Listen.  Between bursts of energy, we must take time to renew to avoid burn out.  Before we give all of ourselves to others, we must give to ourselves.  You can not pour from an empty vessel!  Go, fill yourself up!

Take this advise from Agent Cooper:

Happy November!  Take care!

Love,

Sedona
